Blocked drains are a common problem among households in Australia. Nearly all cases of blocked drains involve earthenware pipes. These pipes were still being used until the early 1980s, increasing your chances of experiencing blocked drain problems if you’re living in an old home. There are several signs of a blocked drain which include:
Generally, blockages in the sewer line are caused by root intrusion. Warm vapor from the sewer pipes may escape at loose joints, attracting tree roots. When tree roots grew inside these pipes, they can cause extensive damage requiring immediate repair.
In the past, cracked or broken pipes will need to be excavated and replaced. The process of excavation will require additional equipment, materials and manhours, thereby, costing you a lot of your precious time and money. That being said, we highly recommended a newer solution called pipe relining
Pipe Relining Explained
Pipe relining is a trenchless method of rehabilitating pipes without the need for deep excavation. This method may require minimal excavation depending on the availability of access points. Pipe relining can be done quickly with the following steps:
Step One – Inspection
If the pipes are clear, a CCTV drain camera will be used to assess the condition. Video inspection will provide essential information to determine whether pipe relining is a suitable option.
Step Two – Drain Cleaning
The damaged pipes will be cleaned thoroughly using a hydro-jet cleaning system. The machine is capable of releasing high pressure water to remove any roots causing the blockage. The pipe must be completely clean to ensure proper bonding between the lining material and the host pipe
Step Three – Lining
Once the cleaning process is complete, the installation of the lining material will commence. An inverter will be used to coat the interior of a damaged pipe with a thermosetting resin mixture. Air pressure will be introduced to bond the resin mixture and the host pipe. This process is known as inversion.
Step Four – Curing
The lining material will be allowed to cure for a couple of hours forming a new pipe. Hot water or steam is required for pipe relining jobs involving larger pipes
Step Five – Evaluation
To ensure the quality of the pipe relining job, a video inspection will be performed.
